Doctorate for Pak Lah
FORMER Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has been conferred the Doctor of Philosophy by the Allianze University Colleges of Medical Sciences (AUCMS) for his contributions in the field of environmental health.
AUCMS chancellor Raja Puan Muda Perlis Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah honoured Abdullah in a special convocation held at Dewan Budi Penyayang in Kepala Batas.
AUCMS president Professor Datuk Dr Zainuddin Wazir in his address said Abdullah, in his tenure as prime minister, had taken steps to bring major changes in the administration of the government.
Dr Zainuddin said Abdullah introduced Islam Hadhari, which is an element in Islam in relation to nature and the preservation of environment, that showed his care for the people and future generations.
“He also introduced changes in the field of basic human rights, we also saw transparency in the government administration, and the most important thing is in the media operation where he brought liberalisation in the industry,” he said.
Abdullah, who is also the Kepala Batas MP, served as Prime Minister between 2003 and 2009.
Abdullah said he was happy to receive the honour, as AUCMS in a short span of time had contributed tremendously to the nation and in the field of medical sciences.
“I am aware that numerous foreign scientists and researchers are coming here to conduct their researches in the university here in the country, and they manufacture commercial products for the global market,” he said.
Entrepreneur Chuah Choon Bin, who is also the founder of Penmaster Corporation Sdn Bhd, was also conferred Honorary Doctor of Philosophy for his contributions in the field of biomedical engineering.
He has invented and manufactured innovative medical equipment for the local and export market.
