Smooth-tongued winner overcomes nerves

This time around, her efforts paid off as she emerged champion in the state-level Information Department’s 1Malaysia Elocution Competition (Non-Malay Category) 2012.

The 20-year-old former student of SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman, Nibong Tebal, said she spent two weeks preparing her speech with a slide presentation to go with it.

“I still need to improve my performance as I will be representing the state in the national-level finals in Kuala Lumpur in July.
.
“Halfway through my presentation, I suddenly froze and forgot my lines.
.
“Thank goodness I skipped that paragraph and carried on with my speech,” she said after the competition at Allianze University College of Medical Sciences (AUCMS), Kepala Batas.

Ooi, who speaks fluent English, Bahasa Malaysia, Hokkien and Cantonese, said she hoped to pursue an English Language degree course at a university in Malaysia.

SMK Seri Balik Pulau student Duncan Ling Ruey Shan, 18, who came second, said it was his first attempt and he felt very nervous.
“My teachers and friends helped me prepare.”

Bukit Mertajam High School student V. Thiyageswari, 19, who came third, said she aimed to be a Malay Language or History teacher.

Ooi, Ling and Thiyageswari received their prizes of RM1,500, RM1,000 and RM500 respectively from state Information Department director Ishak Abdullah.

AUCMS student Winnie Jiau Xiau Hui won RM200 as a consolation prize.
